US probes (Viking 1 and Viking 2), launched in 1975 to explore Mars. Both probes consisted of an orbiter and a landing module. The landing module was designed to take pictures of the surface of Mars and to analyze its soil and atmosphere. The ultimate objective was to determine whether there is life on Mars.
